Reading Research Papers with AI Summaries: Verify the Original Paper

You do not need to read every paper from page one
In Part 3, I covered how to find papers through review papers, references, and cited-by papers. After finding a paper, it is also useful to check its publication type and review status. Literature Research Guide 1 explains those first checks.
The next difficulty is reading the paper itself. Reading from the first page onward does not always show what matters or how the paper relates to your research.
Start by screening papers with their titles and abstracts. Then use an AI summary only for papers that seem relevant. The summary is not the answer; it is a map for reading the original paper. Use it to see the overall structure, then verify the problem, method, how the study examines the question, results, and authors’ discussion in the paper itself.
This article is for people who do not know where to begin when they open a research paper, or who are unsure how much to trust an AI summary. It does not assume subject-specific knowledge or a paid AI plan.

State one reason for reading the paper
Before opening a paper, write one sentence about why you are reading it. You do not need a detailed reading plan. It is enough to know what you want to check.
For example:
- I want to know how earlier work frames this problem.
- I want to check what this method is compared with and how it is evaluated.
- I want to read how the authors explain a particular result.
This gives you a focus for the abstract, the AI summary, and the original paper. It also lets you check afterward whether the paper answered what you wanted to know.
Use the title and abstract to screen papers first
Before asking AI for a summary, read the title and abstract. You do not need to understand every detail. Ask whether the paper seems related to your question and whether it can help answer your reason for reading it.
If the target, problem, broad kind of method, or main result is far from your interests, you do not need an AI summary right away. You may only need to keep the paper as a possible reference or cited-by trail to follow later.
If the abstract makes you think, “I need to check this comparison” or “This study uses a similar target,” the paper is a candidate for an AI summary and a closer read. Screening first saves both reading time and AI usage for papers that matter.
Use an AI summary to make a map of the paper
For papers that remain after this first screen, ask AI for a short map of the whole paper. Ask it to separate at least these parts:
- Background and the problem the authors address
- The research goal or claim
- The overall method
- Conditions and comparisons used for experiments, studies, or analyses
- Main results
- The authors’ discussion and future work
For example:
Summarize this paper by separating its background, the problem the authors address, method, experiments, studies, or analyses, main results, and discussion.
For each part, say which section, figure, or table in the paper I should check.
Do not infer anything that is not in the paper. Say "not confirmed" when the paper does not provide the information.
In my own work, asking another AI to review and revise a summary helped me catch omissions and errors.
However, several AI systems can repeat the same mistake. Do not treat a summary or its review as evidence. Treat it as an entry point to the original paper.
Verify five parts in the original paper
After reading the AI summary, check these five parts in the paper. You do not need to read every part at the same depth. Read the parts most closely related to your reason for reading.

| Results | Which passages, figures, tables, or numerical results support the claim? Under which conditions do the findings support the claim, and under which conditions do they not? |
| Authors’ discussion | How do the authors explain the results? Which conditions do they treat cautiously, and what do they identify as future work? |
If the AI summary and the original paper disagree, use the original paper. Do not stop at saying the summary was wrong. Check which statement, figure, or table led to the mismatch. That helps when you return to the paper or compare it with another one.
Leave two decisions after reading
Before writing detailed paper notes, consider only these two questions:
- Does this paper seem relevant to my research question?
- What paper should I read next, or what should I check next?
You do not need an immediate final answer to the first question. A short note such as “the problem is similar, but the target and evaluation differ” is enough. The second question can lead you back to references and cited-by papers. Return to the search paths from Part 3 with what you learned from this paper.

Summary: Let AI help decide the reading order
An AI summary is not a reason to skip a long paper. It helps you see what is in the paper and decide what to verify first.
State one reason for reading. Screen papers with their titles and abstracts. Use AI summaries only for papers worth a closer look, then verify the problem, method, how the study examines the question, results, and discussion in the original paper. This turns reading from a summary exercise into a way to decide whether a paper can help answer your question.
